14×30 Drag-Racer Garage

Larry Small of Augusta County loves drag racing, and his outbuildings look it.  He has five Chevy “Gassers:” A ’37 Chevy, a ’39 Chevy, a ’55 Chevy, a ’56 Chevy, and a ’57 Chevy.  (There seems to be a theme here….) The cars are surrounded by drag racing paraphernalia: T-shirts, caps, signs, pennants, flags, and a starting light.

These gassers have been completely rebuilt, and are track-ready. Larry is quick to point out that he’s not a mechanic, and only does very basic work on his cars. But he loves to hang out at the track, and to talk shop with the racing crowd.

We’ll let Larry tell his story.

Larry enjoys his unusual collection. “You can’t have too many toys,” he says, grinning.  Unless you don’t have room for them all.  Which is why he purchased a Byler 14×30 garage. He had one drag racer too many.

The garage is vinyl clad, with a single roll-up door, and a single 36” walk through door.  Inside, the floor is painted and lined with two “steel tread plate” runners.  The walls hark back to Norman Rockwell nostalgia, reminiscent of the old neighborhood mechanic shop.  At the back end, two comfy camping chairs are parked on red carpet, awaiting some friendly conversation.  Larry is happy to oblige.  The conversation wanders to the whole reason for this 14×30 garage: the ’55 Chevy drag racer inside.

Larry has high praise for Byler, both the quality of the buildings (this is the fourth one he’s purchased from Bylers) and the quality of the workers, from sales to delivery. And he hasn’t forgotten the delicious homemade donuts he’s enjoyed at various Byler Barns events, made by founder Bennie Byler’s daughter-in-law, Rosalind.
